Interwined Contradiction

A ship needs a destination, then direction, and at last sailing. In one country’s education system, in a huge institute like UAL, principals and policy are set as destination and direction for us, the staff, to sail the ship with the passengers, the students.

The problem is the people who set out these principles and policies were never on the ship. Of course, these ideas will work perfectly in the ideal world but we are not living in one. The reality contradicts the ideal.

What I found confusing, and somehow angry, is that we are told to do one thing and then found out the senior management is doing the complete opposite. Just like, students are not required to print the final major project anymore. Environmental friendly. I agree. But the senior management decided to replace all properly working bins, a block of pure plastic with electronics, in all toilets. Environmental friendly?! We are told to support students with whatever things we could. I agree. Everything things worked fine but their works were taken down in the exhibition. Why? The venue doesn’t have enough space. The venue doesn’t have enough plugs. Of course, nothing is enough if you put 700 students in 1 single exhibition. If you have 10 people in a 1-bedroom flat, there will be problems no matter what.

I agree with all these ideals. But it is frustrating when you are saving up 1 penny here and there, and the senior management spent ten of thousands on extravagance.

  1. Yes, it can be puzzling how institutions like UAL make decisions! I would argue that when a university is run on a business model this is the result. Policy and strategy when considered practically for those ‘on the ground’ , as it were, does not always tally. For me at least this I find frustrating especially when navigating through day to day teaching and support for students.
